Savannah Stevens spent eight years solving financial puzzles for Fortune 500 companies before she walked away and came home. Now, at thirty-two, Stevens CPA, Tax, and Accounting is the only Black-owned CPA firm in Brightcloud, Texas, and she built it herself, one client at a time.
On her birthday she lands the biggest account of her career: Très Savoureux, the upscale Cajun restaurant downtown, owned by Charleston Dubois. He is charming, self-made, and the most eligible bachelor in town. He is also, inconveniently, now her client.
Four days into the audit, her CPA Clarence Hill receives an anonymous text ordering him to a meeting one town over, warning that someone he loves will die if he tells anyone. He goes. He recognizes the person waiting for him. Those are the last words he ever speaks.
The detectives assigned to the case find no shortage of suspects. Clarence had a volatile ex-fiancée who never accepted that it was over, a fraternity brother carrying a grudge from a hazing that went too far, and a former boss whose secret he had agreed to keep. Then someone ransacks Clarence's office after hours, an anonymous caller directs police to the murder weapon, and Savannah sees Charleston in a private conversation he cannot explain.
Everyone she trusts is starting to look like someone she should not.
The answer was on Clarence's desk the entire time, on a flash drive he flagged URGENT. Clarence was an accountant, and accountants notice things. What he found in those ledgers was worth killing for, and the person who killed him is still standing close enough to touch.
Set in a small Texas town where faith, family, and friendship carry as much weight as the crime, Mystery in Brightcloud is a debut mystery about the cost of trusting the wrong person.
Lola M. Fisher is a United States Air Force veteran, auditor, and educator. This is her first novel.
