On the night of the worst storm in years, eight-year-old Clara Morgan looks out her window and sees something collapse beneath the streetlight at the end of Birch Lane.
It is a small silver dog, half frozen, with cracked and bleeding paws and a strange ring worn into the fur around its neck. When it opens its eyes, they are pale blue, clear as light through ice, and far too knowing for any stray.
Clara carries her home in her red coat and names her Luna.
For two winters, Luna is simply Clara's shadow: the silver shape waiting at the edge of the pines after school, the warm weight at the foot of her bed, the best friend nobody else quite understands. Then, one night under a full moon, the air in Clara's room begins to shimmer. Where Luna stood a moment before, there is a girl with silver hair and winter-blue eyes, who whispers Clara's name as if she has always known it.
Luna remembers almost nothing of where she came from. Only snow. Only darkness. The sound of a metal door slamming. And two songs: one far away, rising and falling over the mountains, and one close and warm, like a mother humming in the dark.
In a small blue house at the edge of a snowbound Wyoming town, two girls invent a secret language of their own: rules whispered at midnight, a notebook with nothing on its cover but a small X, a hidden place behind the shed where the pines keep watch. But Silver Creek is waking up. There's a camera on the corner. There are neighbors who notice too much. And a stranger comes knocking with a photograph of a silver dog chained to a post, saying she belongs to someone else.
When the only choice left is to run, Clara and Luna disappear into the frozen forest, where a glowing figure on a wooden bridge will soon be seen by the whole country, and where the people hunting them are not all who they seem.
Tender, magical and full of quiet wonder, My Secret Friend Luna is a story of friendship, courage and belonging, about a girl who found a miracle in the snow and refused to let the world take it away.
Some things are not miracles because they are impossible, but because they happen quietly and no one ruins them.
