My Parents!: Childhood Trauma
At the point when I was just 8 years of age, I was enamoured with two individuals: my *Father* and *Mother*. I always tried to make them proud of me. Despite being their only child, they didn't neglect to *discipline* me when necessary. Most times they *spoiled* me, but when I was *naughty*, they corrected me. My *Father* was a *lawyer* and my *Mother* was a *nurse*. They seemed to love each other very much, but one day, something *unexpected* happened.
At the point when I was just 8 years of age, I was enamoured with two individuals: my *Father* and *Mother*. I always tried to make them proud of me. Despite being their only child, they didn't neglect to *discipline* me when necessary. Most times they *spoiled* me, but when I was *naughty*, they corrected me. My *Father* was a *lawyer* and my *Mother* was a *nurse*. They seemed to love each other very much, but one day, something *unexpected* happened.
It was my birthday, and my *Mother* and *Father* came to pick me up from school. The expression on their faces showed they had *finished work on time*. Seeing them at my school reminded me of that morning. They had been quiet around each other and arguing a lot recently. They hadn't wished me a *happy birthday* at breakfast that morning, I thought.
I was surprised when both of them appeared together to pick me up from school, and they both apologised for almost missing my birthday. I immediately smiled when they both kissed me, and when they gave me a *birthday present*, my heart melted as I thanked them in pure excitement.
It's an *iPad*, I exclaimed as I opened my gift. I had always wanted one.
When we got home, my joy knew no bounds when I also saw my *birthday cake*. It was so beautiful. My parents both clapped and sang the *birthday song* for me, and then they gave me some cake and *juice*. After the small celebration, my mother went into the kitchen.
We are having *7 colours rice* for dinner, my mother announced, and I smiled with excitement.
*7 colours rice* always put me in a *party mood*, and since it was my birthday, I was thrilled. I distinctly remember it being a cool *Friday night*. That night I felt the joy in the *dining room*. The delicious smell of *fried plantain* and *chicken* could bring anyone back to life. I could hardly wait to eat.
My happiness knew no limits when my mother called out to me. She was bringing the food and quickly set the table. I was already thinking about how amazing the meal would be.
Devika, go call your *father*. It's time to eat, my mother said.
I rushed to call him from the room.
Father, let's eat. *Mother* has served dinner, I said, and my father smiled as he came out of the room.
I had already started eating, and we were all enjoying the meal until my father's phone rang. It seemed to remind my mother of her *pain*, and her once-happy face darkened. She was sitting close to my father, and I noticed the fear in his eyes as he hesitated to answer the call. Suddenly, my mother shouted:
How dare she call you? I told you I can't take this anymore! What is wrong with you?
My mother stood up, facing my father. His eyes grew wide when he remembered that I was still at the table. I was scared and confused.
Please, don't do this. *Devika* is watching us, my father whispered, but I heard him.
They exchanged harsh words, words I didn't understand and others I wished I didn't, like liar and cheat.
Why are they fighting so much? I asked myself.
Suddenly, my mother knocked all the dishes off the table, and everything fell to the floor. My beautiful *fried rice*, *juice*, and *cake* were scattered everywhere, and worst of all, my new *iPad* fell and broke. I had been so excited about it, and now everything was ruined. With tears in my eyes, I cried:
Mother! Father! Please stop fighting! I'm scared.
My mother looked at me, tears in her eyes, and said,
My daughter, I'm sorry. It's your father. How could he hurt me like this?
She broke down in more tears and continued.
Devika, we're leaving. Your father has another family, and he doesn't care about you or me.
My father responded immediately,
That's not true! I care about you
