Two powerful stories by August Senoa, one of the defining voices of 19th-century Croatian literature.
In My Friend Lovro, a conversation about Croatian fiction becomes the starting point for the life story of a gifted young man of humble origin. Lovro is brilliant, passionate, ambitious, and restless; yet every path before him seems to narrow into disappointment. Seminary life, unfulfilled love, patronage, scholarship, debt, and social expectation all press upon a mind too large for the world that surrounds it.
In Baron Ivica, Senoa turns to the rural outskirts of Zagreb. Ivica, a vigorous young peasant heir, is drawn into ruin after the death of his father. A dishonest guardian, legal trickery, drink, forced military service, and the indifference of authority strip him of his inheritance, his family, and his promised bride. His bitterly ironic title becomes the mark of a life broken by forces he can neither understand nor overcome.
Published in 1873 and 1874, these two early works show Senoa moving between intellectual tragedy and rural social drama. Together they ask how talent, innocence, love, and justice survive in a world governed by class, paperwork, patronage, and force.
This edition is translated directly from the original 19th-century Croatian publications and includes brief annotations explaining historical, cultural, and linguistic references.
