Sometimes getting dumped completely wrecks you, especially when you're eighteen and have no idea why you got dumped. And so, you look anywhere you can for answers - including to your ex-girlfriend's grandpa and the life stories he tells you every Friday over pizza.
Eugene is a high school senior, and the love of his life, Olivia, has ghosted him. She won't respond to his texts, and she won't talk to him at school. Eugene is crushed - he doesn't understand what is happening, and he's determined to find out why. He keeps going to Olivia's grandfather Eddie's house on Friday nights for pizza and a movie, even though Eddie's granddaughter no longer accompanies him.
Eugene believes everything happens for a reason, and he analyzes every word Eddie says, trying to map the morals of Eddie's stories to his breakup predicament. Through Eddie's stories, including childhood tales and a classic love story, Eugene pieces together his own emotional understanding of the breakup. Inspired by Eddie, Eugene pursues a school project collecting the tales of other families, and he finally begins his healing journey. By listening to Eddie's stories, and growing to appreciate the importance of family memories, Eugene learns that sometimes you don't get closure. But, despite the pain and confusion, it's possible to find happiness after heartbreak.
