Montana Skies tells the story of Cash Roberts, his young wife, Sheena, and their daughter, Tishna, as they go about the business of life and work to make their ranch, the Double W, profitable as both a working ranch and a guest ranch. All the while, looming over the horizon are two ominous threats. One threat is that the father of Cash's former partner may sue Cash to get the sale of the ranch set aside on the grounds that Andy Walker was mentally unstable at the time of the sale. The second threat is the very real possibility that Andy Walker's partners in crime will send a hit man to Montana to eliminate Cash to make the point that it's not healthy to interfere with the business of the Sinaloa Drug Cartel. Into this mix is thrown Susie Walker, Cash's petulant granddaughter, whose mother, Hannah, has brought to Montana because she no longer has the patience to deal with a teen-aged holy terror. Author Clay Mercer presents another entertaining tale that deals with the intricacies of human relationships while exploring the everyday challenges inherent to a working cattle ranch. Says Mercer, This was such a fun book to write. The Alabama Cowboy explored the culture clash between whites and the Crow Indian Nation as well as the generation gap extant in a May-December marriage that involves both cultures. In Montana Skies, when I began to add a petulant, self-entitled, spoiled teenager to the mix, I found the perfect storm composed of adolescent angst and the delusion of self-entitlement, combined with the disconnect between the values of Anglo-Saxon Americans and the Apsáalooke people, and the necessity to adjust one's attitude in order to be truly inclusive, rather than merely possess the false sense of inclusiveness that permeates so many aspects of society today.
