Imagine your 17 year old son getting into an accident that confined him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Worse, imagine being that 17 year old, trapped in a mental prison. Cara and Preston Peters have been dealing with that reality for 15 years. Cara Peters realized that no one will be able to give her son Preston, the love and care that she gives on a daily basis. She has to find some way to give her son the chance of a better life when she can no longer provide it. Cara believes, through random and rare reactions to food, music and smells, that Preston's mind still lives, but lays dormant inside his head.
Enter Dr. Phillip Cunninghall, a former boyfriend from her high school years who has been doing brain and spinal cord research on lab animals for decades now, but protocols prevent him from doing testing on human subjects. Cara persuades Dr. Cunninghall to work with her son in her home, and after much debate, he reluctantly agrees. After a short period of time, Dr. Cunninghall makes a breakthrough with Preston, but hides it from Cara to make sure no harm is being done to him. During subsequent testing at his lab while Preston is connected virtually to the doctor's network, a robbery occurs and Dr. Cunninghall is murdered with Preston as the only witness.
Soon the perpetrators realize that the doctor was in communication with someone else and the cat and mouse game begins. Preston's friends realize something is wrong and try to hide Cara and Preston. The NSA becomes involved and is on the hunt for them, as well. All the while, Preston is trapped, unable to tell anyone what he knows, until...
