The heart is a spiritual altar set before God-a hidden chamber where we meet Him. As an altar, it is a place of worship and service; as a secret chamber, it is where we fellowship with Him. Prayer must be understood through both of these designations, which is why it must be earnest, sincere, honest, and persevering. Through prayer, the human heart becomes both the altar and hidden chamber, the place where we meet, petition and commune with God. Jesus said, Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see (and meet) God (Matt. 5:8; Heb. 12:14). A pure, clean heart allows us to not only enter but also remain in His holy presence. It is within this chamber of intimacy that we experience true fellowship with God, where we enjoy His presence. The heart must therefore be kept carefully so that prayer may remain free and constant.
