Thomas Freeman comes home from Korea, the last of the old keepers, alone in a quiet house with a cedar chest full of names and a town that needs its memory tended. The wars are over. The longest war is only beginning, the one with no front and no medals and no end, the war against forgetting, fought with a pen and a press and his own failing memory while, one porch at a time, the last witnesses die and carry their stories into the ground.
Across thirty years, he races them and loses more often than he wins. He inherits the Liberty Voice and learns to say a whole town's names in print. He comes, late and to his own astonishment, to a wife and a child he never thought a soldier and a keeper would be given. He watches the movement reach even Liberty Grove, and an old man who once integrated an army stands and weeps to see the young rise against the same country at home. And at the last, the hour arrives that his aunt promised him at eighteen, the hour of the sealed envelope, and he breaks the seal his grandmother set sixty years before and learns the thing this family stopped saying after Brownsville.
In the failing light, an old keeper empties the cedar chest down to its bottom, the family Bible with the freed woman's name at its head, and the envelope, opened now, its dark truth out in the air at last, and lays the whole keeping into the hands of a girl with the look of a keeper about her, who will close the chest after he is gone. The names stop going down into the dark and begin, at last, to come forward.
