Excerpt: ... EXTRAORDINARY OCCURRENCES, &c. 1582.--A great hail storm happened at Hursley, Baddesley and in the neighbourhood, this year. The hail-stones measured nine inches in circumference., 1604.--The plague made its appearance at Anfield. Jt broke out in November, and continued till the following February. Many persons died of it, and were not brought to the church, but buried in the waste near their residence. ', ' v 1610.--A person of the'name of Wooll hanged hirnelf at Gosporte, in the parish of Hursley, about this time. He was buried at the corner of Newland's Coppice, and a stake was driven through his body. 1621.--A planked thrashing-floor first laid down in the. parish in this year, viz. at Merdon. Chalk-floors used before, -. 1629.--A great fall of snow in October. It was nearly half a foot deep, and remained on the ground three, or, four days. 1635.--A copyholder was hanged for murder this year. His copyhold seized by the lord as forfeited, but afterwards recovered, viz. in 1664. 165Q.--The chalk-pit at Hatch-gate first opened about this time. 1653, --The greatest quantity of snow that had been known for 50 years, fell this year, in January, and lay on the ground six weeks. The thaw came at last with, a north wind; and when the snow melted, as it did suddenly, the water ran down Hursley-street, and; filled all the cellars. 1666.--The plague appeared again at Hursley in this year, viz. at Longmore. The names of sixteen persons who died of it, are entered in the register. Of this number, five were of the Doling family, viz. father, son, and three daughters. They were all buried at Longmore, except one, who dying as it is supposed at Silkstead, was buried there. 1775.--rAfter a series of wet years, the springs of the parish became so abundant about this time, ...
