Memoirs of Elder Jesse Mercer is a biographical work written by Charles Dutton Mallary and published in 1844. The book chronicles the life of Jesse Mercer, a Baptist minister and leader in the early 19th century. Born in Virginia in 1769, Mercer moved to Georgia as a young man and became a prominent figure in the Baptist community. He helped establish the Georgia Baptist Convention and was instrumental in the formation of Mercer University, which was named in his honor. The book details Mercer's religious beliefs and his efforts to spread the Baptist faith throughout the South. It also provides insight into the social and political climate of the time, including the debates over slavery and the role of religion in society. The memoirs are based on Mercer's personal papers and correspondence, and are considered an important historical document for scholars of Southern religion and culture. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
