This is a reprint of the “Memoir of Henry Clay, †prepared by Robert Charles Winthrop at the request of the New-England Historic Genealogical Society. Henry Clay (1777-1852) was a prominent American statesman and orator who represented Kentucky in both the United States Senate and House of Representatives. He served as Speaker of the House and Secretary of State under President John Quincy Adams.
Clay was a leading figure in the Whig Party and a key proponent of the American System, advocating for protective tariffs, a national bank, and internal improvements.
