Memoir for a Red Carpet is the 6th book of poetry written by poet Birdland Slim. The book begins with a dedication to the Canadian Poet Irving Layton who passed away when this book was started. As Canada's greatest poet Irving Layton has the first three poems written in his honour. the book then moves forward in the spirit of Irving Layton with poetry of personal experience and some jabs at how people write poetry as seen in the poem Flamenco Dancers.. The book deals primarily with themes of loss and separation from family, but also good times when the poet was with his daughter in the summer of 2007.. The book is biographical and was written in chronological order as are all of the poets books. Beautiful poems like Life is an Easy Bake Oven When You are Here and Riding In The Park on our Bikes depict happy times in the summer with the poets family. The second part of the book Emily Dickenson Blues details the separation from his family and includes two poems in honour of Emily Dickenson. the book also deals with loss and death as seen in the poems ON THE DEATH OF THE PAINTER ROGER ING and BURYING MY MOM'S CAT IN THE BACKYARD: Loss and separation are always part of any of the poets books. The book also deals with the poets favourite themes of rock concerts including one by the alternative musician Henry Rollins and sports related poems of the local football team winning the league trophy and poetry of the local hockey club the Regina Pats. the book overall mixes poems of loss and separation with poetry of togetherness and love. The book also includes photography by acclaimed photographer Jason Weedmark.
