On Monday evenings between 9:30 and 10:00, the American television audience enjoyed The Andy Griffith Show on CBS. The Andy Griffith Show never ranked lower than number seven and always remained in the top seven throughout its eight seasons. The show had an average rating of 7.6 out of 10, with The Christmas Story, Season One, Episode Eleven, ranking 8.2 out of 10. The show averaged thirteen to sixteen million viewers per episode per year over its eight-year run. The Griffith Show aired in the 1960s during a time when Americans could escape one of the most traumatic periods in history and the sorrows of the assassinations of an American president and a prominent African-American movement leader, draft and war riots, the epidemic drug crisis, the horrible news pictures of the Vietnam War, and rising crime.
Mayberry, North Carolina, was the setting for fictional characters such as Barney Fife, Floyd the Barber, Gomer and Goober Pyle, Aunt Bee, and Helen Crump. Let us not forget the hilarious mountain man, Ernest T. Bass, and many more characters. The show was witty and zany, and Americans laughed while watching it. The audience loved the quietness, the pleasures, the closeness, the virtues, and the Southern hospitality of small-town life. They enjoy the personal touch of the relationship among easy-to-get-to-know town folks. However, there were times of sadness, disappointment, and everything in between, but it was all overshadowed by love and joy. The characters portray the pleasures of living in and the advantages of a small town instead of city life. The show inspired other rural life programs such as The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Petticoat Junction, all wholesome programming for the family, such as the Griffith Show. Before appearing on the sitcom, some of the future Griffith Show stars had little or no experience in television and movies.
