Mat and the Peach Pit is the story of Mat, a little mouse who, despite being small and despite not knowing all the answers, manages to accomplish something wonderful and meaningful.
Mat begins with a simple wish: he wants a peach tree to grow beside his home. But bringing something into being is not as easy as he first imagines. At one point, he feels discouraged and wants to give up. With the help of his friends, however, he learns to persevere, and in the end, he accomplishes what he set out to do.
Along the way, Mat becomes aware of the movements of up and down all around him. He notices things falling down, shoots growing up, roots reaching down into the earth, and the peach tree stretching upward towards the light. Through his journey, children are invited to observe these same movements in the world around them.
But what does up and down have to do with mathematics?
Spatial awareness and orientation are important foundations for mathematical thinking. Before children work formally with symbols, graphs, axes, measurement, and number relationships, they first experience direction, position, movement, and space through their bodies and through the world around them.
The ideas of up, down, above, below, top, and bottom are not merely everyday words. They carry spatial meaning that later becomes important in mathematical thought. In formal mathematics, up and down appear in the vertical axis, in height, position, graphs, increase and decrease, more and less, and in the way quantities can rise or fall.
Storytelling is one of the most natural ways to bring these ideas to children. Through story, children can meet mathematical meaning before they are asked to work with abstract symbols.
Through Mat's journey, children are brought into contact with the movement of up and down in a warm, imaginative way. The story draws attention to the upward movement of natural growth through the peach tree, while also inviting children to notice the many vertical movements that shape everyday life.
This is a subtle and thoughtful story, rich with meaning. It encourages children not only to pay attention to the world around them, but also to notice, question, wonder, and search for explanations.
