Born to a humble family of an Azerbaijani father and a Kurdish mother in the city of Mahabad in northwest Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian rose from modest circumstances to achieve a successful career in medicine, becoming one of the most respected heart surgeons in the country and President of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. Believing that the challenges facing the health sector were rooted in the broader political and economic issues, Pezeshkian surprised many by entering politics, was elected to the Iranian Parliament and became Minister of Health and Medical Education. Being initially unsuccessful in the Iranian Presidential Elections of 2013 and 2021, Pezeshkian finally achieved his ambition and was elected in 2024.
