The Martyrdom of Polycarp is a historical account of the life and death of Polycarp, a Christian bishop and martyr who lived in the second century. The book is written by Kirsopp Lake, a renowned scholar of early Christianity, and is based on the original Greek text of the martyrdom narrative. The book begins with a brief introduction to the historical context of Polycarp's life and the significance of his martyrdom. It then presents a detailed account of Polycarp's arrest, trial, and execution, which took place in the city of Smyrna (modern-day Izmir, Turkey) in AD 155. The narrative describes Polycarp's unwavering faith in the face of persecution, his refusal to renounce Christ, and his eventual death by burning at the stake. In addition to the martyrdom narrative, the book also includes a number of supplementary materials, such as an analysis of the historical and literary context of the text, a discussion of the authenticity of the narrative, and a comparison of the text with other early Christian martyrdom accounts. Overall, The Martyrdom of Polycarp is a valuable resource for scholars and students of early Christianity, as well as anyone interested in the history of Christian martyrdom and persecution.THIS 46 PAGE ARTICLE WAS EXTRACTED FROM THE BOOK: The Apostolic Fathers V2, by Kirsopp Lake.
