These stories are about John Newton, a middle-aged man who is involved in a car crash with his wife. When he comes round in hospital, he discovers he has been in a coma for several weeks. The first thing on his mind is his wife, Annie. When he asks the nurses in the hospital, he finds out that Annie was still in a coma, but was stable. He is heartbroken and hopes that Annie will come out of her coma and be alright. His son, Steven takes him home from the hospital and stays with his Dad for a week at his Dad's with his wife Susan until John was feeling okay to be by himself. Whilst relaxing in his favourite chair, he looks up at a painting that is hanging over his fireplace. It was a snow scene of a bridge crossing a small river and looked to be in a small country village. He became tired and closed his eyes. The next thing he knows he is standing on the bridge that he recognised as the bridge in the painting. He couldn't believe it and wondered how it could be possible. However, he instinctively knew he was a doctor and on his way to visit a patient. He accepted the roll and carried on walking to the house where he was expected at. This was to be the first of many excursions into paintings that he had around the house and eventually bought more to see where they would take him.He was aware that his wife Annie was still in her coma and visited her every day with his Son Steven and his wife to see how Annie was getting on. The visits into the different paintings helped take his mind of Annie and he began to look forward to what character he would be in the next painting.
