A common, ordinary middle-aged man, Kevin Johnson, finds his world turning upside down starting with the death of his father, then the request from his wife for a divorce, and six months later losing his job. While he struggles to stay afloat, he uses his specialized skills to develop a sure-fire method to break into homes and take what he needs to help him start his own legitimate business. When he finally starts getting comfortable with this temporary profession, he stumbles onto a crime scene in a house where someone else created havoc just before he arrived.Kevin's next steps are reluctant and unpredictable as he's forced to make life-changing decisions in just minutes, and is then caught in a vortex of challenges over the course of just a couple of days. He saves the life of a young girl and finds himself in even more trouble. She's both terrified and yet thankful for her rescue as they work together to plot their next steps. Kevin's fear of being exposed as a burglar is overshadowed by the thought he might be guilty of kidnapping or worse. His situation is complicated by the young girl's understandable fear of the police. She's been convinced the man who tied her up, her mother's boyfriend, is an undercover cop and fears he'll find her again. Kevin can't convince her otherwise.Together, along with Kevin's mother, the three put together a plan to earn reward money and to keep the large sum of cash taken from the scene of the crime. They keep certain evidence secret and keep the young girl hidden from the boyfriend who wants his cash back. As the story unfolds, the Denver police led by Detective Chance Jackson, endeavor to unravel events in this fast-paced novel involving drugs, money, murder and more.
