A mamba can be recognized, at the genus level, by the combination of the following traits:
Infrageneric variation
The genus comprises one largely terrestrial species with broad distribution across eastern and southern Africa (D. polylepis, black mamba) and three predominantly arboreal, leaf-green species localized to forest and coastal belts (D. angusticeps, D. viridis, D. jamesoni). Among the green species, subtle differences in hue, patterning, and geography are the most reliable first-pass field separators, supported by head shape, tail proportions, and in-hand characters where law and safety permit professional examination.
A mamba can be recognized, at the genus level, by the combination of the following traits:
- Build and proportions: long, very slender, and exceptionally agile snakes with a distinct head set on a relatively long neck; the body is cylindrical rather than laterally compressed, and the tail is proportionately long.
- Scalation and texture: smooth, glossy dorsal scales that facilitate silent, low-friction movement through vegetation; head shields are well defined; pupils are round.
- Dentition: fixed anterior fangs of moderate length relative to skull size; additional small maxillary teeth posterior to the fangs.
- Venom profile: predominantly neurotoxic mixtures rich in three-finger toxins and related components that rapidly disrupt neuromuscular transmission; clinical pictures of envenoming are dominated by progressive paralysis.
- Behavioral ecology: diurnal activity, keen vision, and alert demeanor; green species are predominantly arboreal in forest and coastal woodland, while the black mamba is more terrestrial and saxicolous in open woodland and savanna mosaics.
- Threat display: neck flattening is present but modest compared to true cobras; the black mamba famously gapes to expose a dark oral cavity.
