Mercenary, Myth, and the Wars of Empire Africa burned while the Cold War watched.
In the jungles of the Congo, a hard-drinking Irish-born mercenary commander named Michael Hoare led a band of foreign soldiers known as the Wild Geese through one of the most violent and controversial conflicts of the twentieth century. To some, Hoare was a fearless anti-communist warrior who rescued civilians from revolutionary terror. To others, he was the living embodiment of neo-colonial violence-an armed relic of empire fighting for power, profit, and foreign interests in a collapsing postcolonial world.
Blending military history, political investigation, and psychological portraiture, this book examines not only the man called Mad Mike, but the violent century that created him. It explores the blurred line between soldier and mercenary, hero and criminal, liberation and intervention. It asks why private armies continue to thrive in the modern world-and how Hoare's legacy still echoes today through private military contractors, proxy wars, and organizations like Wagner Group.
Part war chronicle, part Cold War investigation, and part study of empire's long shadow, this is the story of the Wild Geese and the dangerous world they helped shape. Author Bio
Wayne J. Gombar is an American author, federal contractor, and researcher whose work focuses on military history, intelligence operations, terrorism, geopolitics, critical infrastructure, and the evolving nature of modern conflict. A veteran of the homeland security and federal contracting sectors, he has spent years working within complex government environments involving communications systems, infrastructure security, emergency management, and national defense support operations.
Gombar holds a Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security and a Master of Science in Emergency Management from Columbia Southern University. He is also a doctoral researcher pursuing advanced studies in criminal justice and the criminological dimensions of extremism, radicalization, and modern information warfare.
His writing combines investigative analysis with narrative storytelling, often exploring the intersection of war, ideology, intelligence activity, and human psychology. Drawing upon extensive research into military operations, covert action, Cold War conflicts, and irregular warfare, Gombar's work examines not only historical events, but the systems of power and violence that continue shaping the modern world.
In addition to his historical and geopolitical research, Gombar has written extensively on aviation, emergency response, counterterrorism, defense technology, and special operations history. His work frequently focuses on the moral ambiguity of warfare, the legacy of empire, and the rise of privatized military power in the twenty-first century.
He resides in the United States and continues to write on military history, intelligence affairs, global conflict, and strategic security issues.
