It is July 5, 1955, when 16-year-old Duane Larkins, a resident of a small town in Iowa, makes a wrong turn in the nearby countryside and meets Mad Max, a stranger representing himself as the eminent physicist Dr. Albert Einstein (whom news reports have claimed died two and a half months earlier). The Dr. Einstein impersonator claims to have invented a time-manipulation machine capable of achieving demonstrable time dilation, in accordance with Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity. He shows the skeptical teenager a small prototype that appears to achieve demonstrable time dilation involving a watch placed inside the prototype. Soon, he persuades the still-skeptical teenager to enter the actual time-manipulation machine, a large metallic cube sitting in a corner of his laboratory and to serve as a human subject for a time dilation experiment lasting a mere six minutes inside the machine. Once the experiment has begun, Duane Larkins does not know what to expect and experiences a gamut of thoughts and feelings during the six minutes. Is the experiment an elaborate hoax? Will he emerge back at July 5, 1955, and laugh along with Dr. Einstein at the joke played on him? Or will he emerge one year into the future, on July 5, 1956, and be the focus of national and worldwide media attention? Will he be famous, perhaps portrayed by a character in a motion picture based on his time travel one year into the future, and extremely rich from sharing, as promised by his host, in the royalties from Dr. Einstein's proprietary process involved in the construction of the time-manipulation machine? What the teenager discovers when he actually emerges, after spending six minutes in the time-manipulation machine, is beyond anything he could have imagined! CAVEAT: Due to strong language that appears in the second half of the novella, this book is not appropriate for young children.
