L'interprétation des messages visuels et audiovisuels est une activité psychique de conversion et de conservation de données encore mystérieuse. Si l'analyse des messages eux-mêmes, en relation ou non avec leur contexte de production et de réception, nous renseigne sur ce qu'ils offrent à percevoir, elle ne nous informe pas pour autant sur ce que le destinataire du message, qui l'interprète, en comprend et en retient. En présentant des analyses de discours tenus sur les images par la presse, la critique ou la littérature en alternance avec des études d'images variées, issues du cinéma, de la presse ou encore de la télévision, ce livre met en évidence les attentes du spectateur et les manifestations de leur satisfaction ou de leur déception. Il montre que, quelle que soit leur nature (documentaire ou fiction), les oeuvres sollicitent des types d'adhésion relevant le plus souvent du croire et dont la mémorisation est modulée selon l'engagement et la réceptivité du spectateur, finalement plus autonome que manipulé, plus séduit que victime.
