Los Angeles, 1949.
The lights of Hollywood glittered, but in the shadows, dreams could turn to dust.
Jean Spangler was a rising starlet, young, beautiful, and hungry for her break. On a warm October night, she left her Los Angeles apartment, telling her sister-in-law she had a meeting and then a late-night film shoot. She never returned.
Two days later, her purse was found in the brush of Griffith Park, a cryptic note inside hinting at secrets, lovers, and a mysterious Dr. Scott. The police investigation quickly tangled with rumors of mobsters, scandalous affairs, and whispered studio cover-ups. Kirk Douglas's name emerged in headlines. So did shadowy figures tied to organized crime. And through it all, one question lingered...what really happened to Jean Spangler?
Lights, Camera...Gone takes readers deep into the seedy underbelly of Hollywood's golden age, where image was everything and the truth was often the first casualty. With a historian's eye and a noir storyteller's ear, Dexter Vaughn unravels the conflicting accounts, follows the cold trails, and resurrects one of Tinseltown's most enduring mysteries.
In the city of dreams, Jean's disappearance remains an unfinished story.
