New York, 1991. Pruitt Links, the do-nothing youngest son of a secretive Berber commodities dynasty, wakes up from a near-fatal overdose with two things he didn't expect: Lucia, the Cuban call girl who reluctantly saved his life, and a summons to Algeria, where his grandmother is dying and the entire clan is gathering in the mountains of Kabylie. Tailing him the whole way is Gaeton Rousseaux, a washed-up French Interpol agent convinced the family is rigging global commodity prices, if he could only prove it.

A one-man, around-the-world campaign to torch the planet's sugar crop, from Brazil to India to the cane fields of the Philippines, and send prices through the roof. By the time his family realizes the markets are exploding in their favor, their black sheep is face-down in a Filipino police hut, and the only man who knows the truth is the Interpol agent who owes him his life.
