The rest of the world will learn nothing. Kabylia, 1941. An American film crew arrives in the Atlas Mountains a year before the American army does, sent to document a war that has not happened yet, guided by Rezkia, a Berber auntie who narrates the future as if she has lived it twice.
Through their lens: Achour, a mountain farmer who crosses the sea to dig, weld, and sweep the ports of France so his family can eat, and his son Mokran, born under the storks in the autumn of 1941, who grows from village mischief-maker into a boy determined to join the Freedom Fighters as the Algerian revolution catches fire around him. Between father and son: a barber's scissors, a stolen stork egg, a dog named Derwish, and a war that asks the family for everything it has.
Adapted from Mehdi Adam Iskounen's memoir, MOKRAN OF TASLENT is a war drama told in the grammar of a 1940s newsreel: part Capra pastiche, part folk chronicle, part elegy for a boy who gave the revolution everything. Colonial Algeria is rendered whole, bewitching and brutal in the same breath: the olive harvests and couscous feasts, the torture rooms and the napalm, the radio broadcasts a family learns to read between the lines.

About the author: Alex Iskounen is a screenwriter, producer, and casting director working between the United States and Japan. Credits include casting director on Toei and Sony Pictures' Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya The Beginning and producer of the Japanese feature Two on the Edge, which earned a five-star review from Kinema Junpo. Iskounen's screenplays have twice reached the final round of consideration for the Sundance Institute's Screenwriters Lab and earned recognition from the Academy Nicholl Fellowships and the Austin Film Festival.
