Ladies Trip is a contemporary novel about love, ambition, and the courage to build a life on your own terms. Amaka Alfred is a Nigerian journalist living in Paris who has spent years protecting herself from heartbreak after her first love left for America. She pours her energy into her work at Africa Revival, the magazine run by her magnetic and maddening boss, Mr. Okoro, and into a dream born on a quiet morning by the sea in Etretat: a cultural diversity project that would bring women from different backgrounds together to celebrate and support one another.
An invitation to speak at a natural hair conference in Nairobi pulls Amaka far from the office and into the path of Thomas, a Zimbabwean lawyer and businessman who pursues her with charm and generosity. Through the markets of Nairobi, a safari at the national park, and the beaches of Mombasa, she finds herself caught between two men who each believe she belongs to him. Back in Paris, her friend Jessica mocks the project at every turn, and old loyalties are tested in ways Amaka never saw coming.
As sponsors and supporters begin to gather, Amaka takes her vision to a conference in Marseille and a festival in Narbonne, where more than a thousand people come together for music, fashion, food, and dance. Along the way she challenges her own beliefs about marriage and asks why a man may have many wives while a woman is judged for wanting more than one husband.
Told in Amaka's warm, confident voice, and set across Paris, Normandy, Kenya, the south of France, and the Portuguese coast, the novel is part romance, part travelogue, and part celebration of African culture and identity. It explores friendship and envy, desire and ambition, and the difficult freedom of choosing for yourself. It is a story for readers who love romantic fiction with a global stage and a heroine who refuses to shrink.
