Lucy Martinez was the kind of girl who could disappear in a crowded room. Not literally, of course-though sometimes she wished she could. She was the girl who sat in the back corner of Mrs. Chen's fifth-grade classroom, the one who kept her eyes down when the teacher asked questions, even when she knew the answers. She was the girl who ate lunch quickly and quietly, hoping no one would notice her. Lucy was afraid of a lot of things.
She was afraid of speaking up in class and saying something wrong. She was afraid of trying new things and failing. She was afraid of standing out, of being laughed at, of not being good enough. Sometimes, late at night when she couldn't sleep, Lucy wondered if she'd always be this way-small and scared and invisible. But Lucy had a secret. In her imagination, she was brave.
When Lucy closed her eyes, she could be anyone. A knight defending a castle. An explorer discovering new lands. A hero saving the day. In her mind, she wasn't afraid of anything. She faced dragons and crossed raging rivers and stood up to villains without her voice shaking or her hands trembling. Her imagination was her favorite place to be.
One rainy Saturday afternoon, Lucy was curled up in the window seat of her bedroom, watching raindrops race down the glass. Her mom had taken her to a used bookstore that morning, and Lucy had found a beautiful old book with a worn leather cover and gold lettering on the spine.

Lucy wasn't sure why she'd picked it up. Her family went to church sometimes, and she knew the basic stories-baby Jesus in a manger, Jesus walking on water, Jesus rising from the dead. But she'd never really thought much about them beyond that.
She opened the book carefully, breathing in that wonderful old-book smell of paper and time. The pages were thin and delicate, with beautiful illustrations scattered throughout. Lucy began to read.
The first story was about Jesus calming a storm. His disciples were terrified, certain they would drown, but Jesus simply stood up and told the wind and waves to be still. And they obeyed. Lucy read it twice, her finger tracing the words.
Jesus had been afraid sometimes too, the book said. He knew what it felt like to face hard things, but He did them anyway. He spoke up when others stayed silent. He stood up for people everyone else ignored. He faced His fears with faith, trusting that God was with Him.
Something stirred in Lucy's chest-a small, warm feeling like a candle being lit in a dark room.
I wish I could be brave like that, she whispered to no one in particular.
She didn't know it yet, but that wish was about to change everything.
