The Vatican has established a team led by Monsignor Fürthwanger, who enlists seven private investigators to look into a surge in the replacement of artworks-primarily paintings depicting Mary Magdalene. The substituted canvases bear an unusual signature: an almost invisible Pattee cross, flawlessly integrated into the artwork. The novel weaves together the fates of numerous characters, some entangled in the plot of these strange replacements and others not; among them, two figures stand out: L'Ombra (The Shadow), a mysterious friar who appears across Europe, hooded so as to reveal only a pair of incredible, magnetic blue eyes, and Sergei Podrovich, a shrewd, skilled, and ruthless international thief.

The investigators in the Vatican's employ all meet a tragic end, compelling the powerful Monsignor to summon Isacco Lancetti to Rome. Alongside L'Ombra, Sergei, the team, and the Mossad, Lancetti will become a central figure in the unfolding drama. An investigator of modest fortune, an American born to an Italian father, Isacco is a dreamer trapped in a life he has failed to build or master. Catapulted into a vastly different world, face-to-face with sheer power, mystery, and ancient histories, he will nevertheless emerge as the chosen one-not due to any hidden investigative prowess, but simply because he is a good man who thinks for himself, refuses to accept pre-established truths, and, above all, chooses not to judge. Isacco Lancetti will risk his life in the eternal clash between good and evil, raison d'état and truth, and the love and hatred about which he will never harbor a single doubt.
