The Long Engagement offers a detailed exploration of the Mandaean people, an ancient Gnostic religious group primarily based in Iraq and Iran. Authored by Lady Ethel Stefana Drower, a noted scholar of Middle Eastern cultures and religions, this work delves into the history, beliefs, rituals, and social structures of the Mandaeans. Drower's research provides invaluable insights into a community that has maintained its distinct identity for centuries, despite facing numerous challenges and periods of persecution.
The book explores Mandaean cosmology, their unique interpretations of biblical figures, and their rich tradition of religious texts. It also examines their social customs, family life, and the ways in which they have adapted to changing political and social landscapes. The Long Engagement is an essential resource for anyone interested in the religious history of the Middle East, Gnostic traditions, or the cultural anthropology of religious minorities. Its enduring value lies in its comprehensive and sympathetic portrayal of a fascinating and often misunderstood people.
