As Knox and Josephine's connection deepens over encounters like a simple date at a taco stand and dinner at his condo, Belladonna's jealousy ignites. Feeling her control slip, she escalates her attacks, using dark magic and curses against Josephine, only to find they mysteriously backfire or fail, often resulting in misfortune for Belladonna herself (spilled coffee on designer clothes, a broken heel).

Knox, feeling clearer and stronger thanks to Josephine's influence, finally recognizes Belladonna's toxic nature and definitively ends their relationship. Enraged, Belladonna consults her coven sisters, only to be warned that Josephine is divinely protected, possibly a descendant of their patron Goddess Lilith, and that harming her could bring wrath upon the entire coven. Belladonna ignores the warnings, determined to destroy Josephine.

Meanwhile, Knox learns the disturbing truth about Belladonna's past from a private investigator - she uses magic, and previous wealthy partners died under suspicious circumstances after similar mysterious illnesses. Realizing the danger he and Josephine are in, Knox initiates a legal investigation with his lawyer, David Chen, and secretly begins a three-month project: renovating the building next to the coffee shop into Josephine's dream apothecary and loft apartment, planning it as a surprise to ensure her safety and help her achieve her dream.

Belladonna, though eventually arrested for violating a restraining order Knox obtains, manages to secure bail through her powerful attorney mother. Forbidden from using magic directly, they resort to mundane means, hiring a dangerous drug addict who orchestrates a hit-and-run attack on Josephine. Josephine survives thanks to her intuition and resilience, though the incident forces her to confront memories of past trauma and addiction. Knox rushes to her side, his protective instincts fully engaged, staying with her but respecting her boundaries as she recovers. This event also reveals Josephine's hidden history of surviving a brutal assault years prior and her quiet acts of kindness towards Dallas's homeless population.

The novel culminates with Belladonna's trial, where evidence of her past crimes and the attempted murder of Knox leads to a conviction and a lengthy prison sentence without parole, bringing justice to her victims' families.
