Logs, Kibana & Observability for Product Managers is a practical, beginner-friendly guide to using logs and observability to investigate real product incidents, understand user journeys behind the interface, and have better conversations with technical teams.
You'll start from zero: what a log is, why logs exist, what information they contain, and how to use Kibana to find the events that matter. From there, you'll learn how to work with timestamps, log levels, fields, filters, and KQL searches; follow IDs across systems; reconstruct an operation step by step; and compare successful and failed journeys.
But this is not a book about Kibana for the sake of learning Kibana.
It is about learning to answer questions such as:
- What actually happened to this user?
- How far did this operation get?
- Did the payment fail, or did something go wrong afterward?
- What happened immediately before the error?
- How can I follow an order across multiple services?
- Is this an isolated case or part of a wider incident?
- Where does a failed operation first differ from a successful one?
- What evidence should I bring to the engineering team?
You'll also learn one of the most important lessons when investigating incidents: finding an error does not mean you have found the cause.
The book teaches you how to separate facts from assumptions, recognize patterns, compare working and failing operations, estimate the scope of an incident, and communicate your findings without jumping to conclusions.
