About the guide
Little Ruth: First Day of School supports social-emotional learning by exploring the excitement and nerves of being new at school. Ruth models courage and kindness as she makes friends and overcomes shyness, giving children concrete examples of how to include others and build confidence in new environments. The companion teaching guide offers educators activities to strengthen reading comprehension and SEL skills, including role-play, dramatic play, vocabulary extension, and reflection prompts.
The purpose of the teaching guide activities is to teach story elements (i.e., character, setting, plot, events, etc.) to students in Kindergarten through third grade, based on grade-level learning standards.
For all students, start by reading First Day of School. After reading the story, discuss what happened in the book and use the key points and discussion topics to teach elements of a story for each grade level reading comprehension and social/emotional learning development. The tools and activities help children practice emotional vocabulary, perspective-taking, and inclusive behaviors, making it ideal for classrooms focused on empathy, self-awareness, and community-building.
