Does your little one ever say, I can't wait to be big! Meet Nico, the impatient dragonfly nymph who feels exactly the same way.
Dive into this educational nature picture book adventure as Nico hatches beneath Cattail Pond and discovers a secret underwater school-complete with swaying plant curtains and wise Professor Dudley. With his loyal friend Arnie by his side, Nico learns important skills to survive and to trust that growth takes time.
Through wobbly beginnings, exciting lessons, molts, and metamorphosis, Nico experiences the wonder of the dragonfly life cycle: from egg to nymph to dazzling adult ready to soar. Along the way, he experiences wide-eyed curiosity, growing frustration, moments of fear, and pure joy, making it instantly relatable.
Why families love this book:
- Educational: Weaves real dragonfly science (life cycle, metamorphosis, pond ecosystems) in an engaging story and beautiful illustrations to help children develop curiosity about nature and encourage a love of learning. Illustrations convey the three different nymph development stages.
- Heartwarming lessons: Gently teaches patience, self-acceptance, and a powerful growth mindset-showing children that every stage of growing up is valuable and worth savoring while giving parents a warm, supportive way to guide impatient little ones who can't wait to be big. We don't want our children wishing away their childhoods-we want them to savor every beautiful stage.
- Adorable & engaging: Lovable characters, beautiful, detailed illustrations, and a tender transformation scene make it irresistible for repeat reads.
- Bonus Fun Facts section: Extends the excitement with amazing dragonfly trivia kids adore-like how dragonflies can fly up to 30 mph (faster than many animals!), fly backwards, hover like helicopters, have nearly 360-degree vision, and other interesting details. These facts make learning feel like play! They can also spark fascinating conversations.
A picture book for ages 4-8 (depending on the child's development and interests) that's great for bedtime stories, classrooms (insects, life cycles, nature units), homeschool, reluctant readers, bug fans, and anyone navigating change-like starting school or welcoming a sibling.
In a fast-paced world, this sweet tale reminds every child: You're right where you need to be. Trust the timing of growth; each stage is precious. There's no need to hurry to grow up; you'll be right on time.
