By: Dr. Albert Bruce Pruitt, Pub. 2009, reprinted 2026, 216 pages, Index, soft cover, ISBN #978-1-63914-749-6. Bertie County was created in 1722 from Chowan County and from were carved out: Edgecombe, Tyrrell, Northampton and Hertford Counties. These lists of taxable people contain the names of head of household of farms or the overseer where there was no master or mistress of the farm, names of white servants, names of wives and children, names of free mullattoes, and the names of both negro males and females. These records can act like a mid-year census helping the genealogists trace a person or family when and where they lived and owned land.
