Some organisations are required to sustain operational continuity while simultaneously developing the capabilities needed for an evolving future-without the structural maturity, organisational depth or resource buffers that more established organisations often possess. They must continue serving customers, strengthening capabilities and responding to changing demands while operating under persistent structural constraint. It is this distinctive organisational condition that this book calls the Liminal Organisation.
Building upon the systems foundation established in People, Process & Cash Flow, The Liminal Organisation develops a new way of understanding how organisations preserve continuity while evolving under these conditions. Rather than viewing organisations primarily through operational activity or financial performance, the book examines the underlying organisational conditions that shape their ability to sustain, adapt and endure over time.
The ability of an organisation to preserve continuity is seldom determined by any single element in isolation. It is shaped by the evolving relationships between people, processes and financial resources, and by the organisation's capacity to absorb strain while continuing to perform. These organisational conditions often develop gradually beneath visible performance, remaining unnoticed until their effects begin to influence the organisation's future capability.
Rather than presenting another framework for organisational change, The Liminal Organisation offers a systems perspective on organisational continuity. It explores why structural constraints matter, why visible activity does not always reflect underlying organisational capacity, and why sustaining continuity requires managers to understand not only what their organisations are achieving, but also what they are becoming.
Written for business leaders, entrepreneurs, consultants, operations professionals and students of organisational systems, this book provides a disciplined conceptual framework for interpreting organisational conditions before they become evident through conventional performance measures. It is intended not as a collection of management techniques, but as a way of seeing organisations more clearly and understanding the conditions from which sustainable performance emerges.
Book II of the Organisational Trilogy, The Liminal Organisation extends the triadic systems perspective introduced in People, Process & Cash Flow and provides the conceptual bridge to the trilogy's concluding volume, Time-Constrained Finance, where financial evidence is interpreted in the context of organisational continuity.
