The novel 'Like Butterflies' is a historical fiction by Nigerian author Abeeb Lekan Sodiq, that follows the defiance of an enslaved royal princess, Sisi, from the 19th-century Oyo Empire in western Nigeria, who boldly inspired a rebellion against her local slaver. It showed how an African society fractured by external control gave birth to a local slave system that thrived. The story begins and ends in the Oyo Empire, deviating from familiar slave narratives that end in the diaspora. The novel also mentions colonial Dahomey (Benin) and the Gold Coast (Ghana). The book's themes include the fight for freedom, survival, forbidden love, and a heartbreaking betrayal. The book has already drawn international attention following an endorsement by Ambassador Pamela E. Bridgewater (ret.), former United States Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, the Republic of Ghana, Jamaica, and the first African-American woman to serve as Consul General in apartheid South Africa. It has also been endorsed by the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture (LSCAC), Nigeria, citing its strong cultural and historical relevance.
