Most people trust the financial system with the product of their lives. Their savings. Their earnings. Their future. They do so without knowing that the word deposit, the most ordinary word in personal finance, describes a transaction in which they hand over legal ownership of their money to an institution that cannot guarantee its return.
Licensed to take asks the question that the financial system is designed to prevent you from asking: whose money is it, really?
The answer draws on three centuries of political philosophy. John Locke argued that property rights precede governments, that what you earn is yours before any institution exists to contest it. Frederick Douglass showed that economic independence is inseparable from personal freedom. Ludwig von Mises identified inflation as a transfer of wealth from savers to issuers, conducted without consent and without disclosure. Adam Smith warned that licensed industries write rules to protect themselves, not the people they serve.
Licensed to take applies this tradition directly to the financial system as it actually operates today: the custodial structure that makes depositors into creditors, the fractional reserve model that generates dividends from money it structurally cannot repay, the currency fragmentation that extracts a toll from every border crossing, and the default settings that keep the arrangement in place.
It also describes what has changed. For the first time in history, the technology exists to hold, move and protect assets without institutional permission. The philosophical case for individual financial sovereignty, argued for three centuries without a practical instrument to exercise it, finally has one.
This is not a book about cryptocurrency. It is a book about ownership, freedom and the financial system built to limit both.
