At the start of his retreats, Peter Brown often read through a handout, placing special importance on the part where it said, Be real and authentic; investigate the actuality of your experience. No rules, no obligations, nothing to live up to. The actuality of your being is the sole authority. Own your experience of the radiance, and don't wait for permission. This retreat is only for you. This sentiment sets the tone for this book.
Peter took the scientific approach to a new level, emphasizing direct observation and radical empiricism: The empirical fact is this: if you exist, you experience. The empirical fact is that you experience nothing other than your experience. He called his approach to spiritual inquiry 'the yoga of radiant presence, ' which supports anyone sufficiently earnest and open to engage with the actuality of their experience beyond the embellishment of imagination. The fruit of this recognition is realization and liberation.
His teaching enlivened certain principles found in various traditions, such as Dzogchen and Kashmir Shaivism, while freeing them of archaic language and esoteric rituals. For Peter, the sheer presence of existence was both astonishing and familiar. From this perspective, miraculous feats like levitation or awe-inspiring wonders like the Aurora Borealis are no different from a leaf falling or a breeze rustling the curtains. The fact that radiant presence is encountered in the experience of a leaf's descent renders the leaf's journey a profound phenomenon.
Peter invited those who came to his talks to let go of their mistaken interpretations and pursuit of specialness, marvel at the fuzzy and weird ways the radiance presents itself, discern the true nature of themselves and reality, and have fun along the way.
