Twelve-year-old Maren Ashfield finds a blue book in her favourite secondhand shop. It has no author. No title on the spine. But the first page reads: A Record of the Life of Maren E. Ashfield - and what follows is her entire life, described in accurate and slightly alarming detail, right up to the moment she is standing there reading it.
Then it begins to describe what happens next. While she is holding it, a new sentence forms on the page - letter by careful letter - telling her exactly what she is doing at that moment.
And then it writes something she absolutely refuses to do.
Following the book leads Maren to a street that most people have never noticed, a door that opens without being unlocked, and a staircase that goes down considerably further than any building should allow. At the bottom lies the Archive of Unlived Lives: a library so vast its upper shelves dissolve into permanent dimness, so ancient its books have learned to read themselves aloud, and so strange that the shelves sometimes rearrange while you are walking between them.
Every book in the Archive describes something that almost happened. A world that came within a single decision of being real. A life that nearly went differently. A moment that almost changed everything - and then did not. The Archive holds all the possibilities that history left behind, condensed into books that whisper to themselves in the dark.
But someone has been breaking the rules.
Nine books have been secretly altered. Someone is rewriting the impossible histories inside them, building invisible pressure toward a single catastrophic act: making one unlived world real enough to replace this one. To uncover who - and why - Maren must work alongside the suspicious, sardonic Felix, who is hiding something enormous, and the brilliant Theodora, who catalogues the library by emotion and always arrives with biscuits. Together they must navigate a place where reading is genuinely dangerous, where some books offer the one thing you most desperately want, and where the rules exist for very good reasons.
Deep in the personal histories section, on a shelf that bears her own name, Maren finds a book called A Shorter Grief.
She knows exactly what it contains. She knows what shorter means. She knows she should put it back.
But knowing something and doing something about it, as every reader of this book will discover, are very different things.
