First published in 1820 as part of Irving's The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow helped establish Washington Irving as one of the earliest great writers of American fiction. Its combination of humor, suspense, and folklore has made the story a lasting classic of American literature.
