Elias Mercer had always distrusted the way history behaved after the fact. Not the raw incidents-the blood, the choices, the damage-but the tidy narratives sewn together later, when memory went soft and sharp truths were filed down to something polite. Meaning, he believed, was scavenged like scrap metal, buffed until it gleamed, while the human cost-the torn hands, the ruined lives-was quietly swept into the gutter. Men were immortalized for triumphs and milestones, for banners raised and lines crossed, never for the wreckage they left smoking in their wake.
That omission terrified him.
Not in an abstract way. Not philosophically. It lived in his muscles, in the tightness behind his eyes, in the low-grade dread that followed him from room to room. Erasure was not a concept to Elias. It was a fate.
Beyond his window, the city thrashed and howled. Sirens braided with shouting voices. News alerts bloomed and vanished. Protests collided head-on with counter-protests, each side clutching its version of truth like a relic-justice, liberty, reform-while secretly aching for one thing only: to last. To be remembered when the noise died down.
Elias recognized that hunger immediately.
It curled inside him during the long, soundless hours when the apartment seemed to hold its breath. When dust settled on unopened books. When half-born theories bled across notebook margins. When the workbench stared back at him like an altar waiting for sacrifice. In those moments, he felt transparent. Uncelebrated. Unregistered by the world's ledger.
Invisible.
And still-undeniably-brilliant.
That, he believed, was the cruelty of it. Intelligence without an audience was just another form of disappearance. Brilliance, untreated, decayed. It demanded witnesses. It required acknowledgment. It needed a record-a Testimony carved deep enough that time itself would hesitate before erasing it.
Legacy, Elias insisted to himself, was not indulgence. It was self-defense. A receipt proving that a life had substance. That it pressed back against the void instead of dissolving quietly into it.
So when he finally crossed the invisible threshold-when he stopped theorizing and started building, stopped observing and started acting-it wasn't insanity pushing him forward. That was the convenient story cowards told. The truth was messier. Grief played its part. So did fear. But above all, it was the choking, relentless panic of vanishing without a footprint. To be forgotten, Elias believed, was the only true death. And he would do anything to avoid it.
