Objet de menace, Joseph fut enlevé, menacé de mort s'il persistait dans ses analyses. Falmata, à son tour le fut pour assouvir les désirs sexuels de Adoum. Violée, elle se donne la mort par la faute de son oncle, soudoyé pour convaincre la fille et sa mère à renoncer à leur plainte. Joseph qui se prédisposait à témoigner, voit son père perdre son travail et meurt des suites d'un infarctus. Nul ne sait comment la mère de Falmata meurt à son tour. Seul Joseph, soutenu par le censeur, fait une déposition devant le tribunal qui aboutit à une condamnation de Adoum et Moustapha, en dépit des cabales ourdies par son père pour éteindre l'affaire.
From the very first days of class, Adoum, the son of the powerful General Saleh, found himself with an enemy to be eliminated. Joseph, the son of a simple clerk, had caught the attention of the privileged young man by making pertinent remarks during French class, the first topic of which was national consciousness. Indeed, by denouncing the incivility and negligence of those in power, the young man, whose viewpoint aligned with that of his classmate Falmata, unwittingly struck a nerve with Adoum, whose parents completely controlled the country and its government. Joseph was threatened and kidnapped, with death threats if he persisted in his observations. Falmata, in turn, was kidnapped to satisfy Adoum's sexual desires. Raped, she took her own life, a victim of her uncle, who had been bribed to convince her and her mother to drop their complaint. Joseph, who had been preparing to testify, saw his father lose his job and die of a heart attack. No one knows how Falmata's mother also died. Only Joseph, supported by the censor, gave a deposition before the court, which led to the conviction of Adoum and Moustapha, despite the plots hatched by his father to bury the case.
