Laurel Creek Grove is a coming-of-age story set on a family farm in rural Appalachia in the late 1990's. Told through the eyes of a young boy named Aaron, the novel follows a boy who desperately wants to prove that he is capable of becoming a farmer while discovering that farming-and growing up-are considerably more complicated than he ever could have imagined.

When Aaron is given the responsibility of rearing two calves, he begins to understand that farming involves both affection and difficult decisions. At the same time, his curiosity about the land they farm leads him to discover the forgotten history of Laurel Creek Grove, connecting his family's farm to generations of people who lived there before him, and the tough decisions they had to make as well. Throughout the years, Aaron learns that farming is defined less by freedom than by constant responsibility, as he slowly begins to understand that his father's strictness is often his way of preparing him for adulthood.

Laurel Creek Grove is ultimately a story about family, responsibility, tradition, and growing up. Aaron learns that strength is not simply the ability to endure hardship, but also the willingness to care for the animals, people, and land entrusted to him.
