Moscow, today. A retired professor of German opens her morning newspaper and finds, in the small print of the dead, a name she has not spoken in forty years. Andreas Berger. Baden-Baden. And a single German word rises in her - the word she has carried since the summer of 1985, and never once said aloud.
Yalta, 1985. The Soviet Union believes itself eternal. Lena, nineteen, has her whole Moscow life already written for her: the institute, the suitable fiancé, the two-room future. Andreas has come from West Germany with an Intourist group to see the sea. No one told him he would find a girl who goes still at the water's edge the way he does.
They share no language. So, word by word - Komm. Warte. Bleib. - they build one. And as Lena learns to say things in German that she could never say in Russian, she discovers something more dangerous than love: another possible version of herself.
