The thaw reveals what winter was meant to keep buried.
When a Nulhegan land steward discovers scattered human remains near the Canadian border, the evidence has already been damaged by animals, water, and years beneath the frozen ground. The county sees an unidentified body. Deputy U.S. Marshal Benjamin Walker sees a burial site beside a corridor once used to move contraband between Vermont and Quebec.
The remains may belong to Drew Belanger, a thirty-one-year-old Newport man who disappeared in November 2010. The old investigation reached a convenient conclusion: Drew owed money, crossed into Canada, and chose not to come home. His sister never believed it. Drew left behind his coat, his dog, an uncollected paycheck, and a frightened final call that the file treated as another excuse.
Walker has only days to establish a federal connection before his office pulls him back. The thaw is changing the scene by the hour. An older rust-colored pickup keeps appearing near the people he interviews. Records do not match the dates on the official reports. And every road Walker follows leads closer to an old trafficking network designed so that no single person can expose the whole.
To identify the dead man and learn why he was buried, Walker must navigate Nulhegan stewardship, county loyalties, federal task-force history, and the quiet resistance of people who decided long ago that the case was finished. Meanwhile, the fragile routine he is building with his daughter depends on the one thing his work has never allowed him to promise: that he will be there when she expects him.
The Last Frost is the second Benjamin Walker novel, a cold-case mystery and rural federal procedural set during Vermont's treacherous spring thaw. It can be read as a complete mystery, with Walker's family story continuing from The Last Lap.
If you like the atmospheric crime fiction of William Kent Krueger, the rural suspense of C.J. Box, and the sharp, character-driven mysteries of Craig Johnson, you'll enjoy The Last Frost.
Return to the Northeast Kingdom, where the cold preserves more than evidence, and every thaw comes with a cost.
