Martin Delany never set out to be a legend. He set out to survive a cholera epidemic no one else would walk into, to build a newspaper alongside Frederick Douglass, to sail across the Atlantic in search of a homeland that didn't yet exist, and to stand in front of a superior officer and declare that formerly enslaved families had a right to the land they'd worked their whole lives. He did all of it as one man, in one lifetime-and none of it alone.
Larger Than Life: The Legend of Martin Delany tells his story sideways, through the eyes of four ordinary people who each crossed his path at a different turning point in American history: a grieving youth during Pittsburgh's cholera outbreak, a young apprentice caught between two great men's clashing visions at an abolitionist newspaper, a skeptical expedition member betting everything on a homeland across the ocean, and a soldier who enlists in the 54th Massachusetts chasing the rumor of a Black officer who might finally lead men who look like him.
None of them ever meet each other. All of them are changed by the same man.
Grounded in the real, documented history of Delany's life, this is a story that doesn't smooth over the hard parts-the triumphs are real, and so are the costs.
Not every hero leads. Some just make you brave enough to follow.
A standalone YA historical novella, Book One in the Larger Than Life series-each volume built around a different, underserved figure in Black history, told through the people who stood near enough to be changed by them.
