In December 1905, the public flogging of a handful of sugar merchants on the orders of a Qajar governor set in motion one of the most consequential political upheavals in the history of the modern Middle East. The Persian Constitutional Revolution of 1905 to 1911 produced the first elected parliament and written constitution in the Islamic world, transforming the political vocabulary of an entire civilization and introducing into Persian public life the radical proposition that subjects were citizens possessing rights that no monarch and no empire could override.
Kit Doyle-Poole's sweeping narrative history traces the revolution from its structural origins in fiscal insolvency and imperial subjugation through the mass sanctuaries, the parliamentary debates, the military siege of Tabriz, and the armed liberation of Tehran, to the final imperial strangling of December 1911. Drawing on the full cast of the revolutionary drama - the pragmatic mujtahid Behbahani and the principled Tabatabaʿi, the working-class commander Sattar Khan, the radical intellectual Taqizadeh, the American treasurer Morgan Shuster, and the formidable clerical opponent Shaykh Fazl-Allah Nuri - the book maps the revolution's achievements, its self-destructive fractures, and the long shadow it cast across the Pahlavi dynasty, the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and the ongoing argument about law, sovereignty, and religious authority that defines Iranian political life to this day.
