She became a factory worker, learned to fly, became an instructor-and then went to war in a Yak fighter against the Luftwaffe.
Yekaterina Katya Budanova was one of the most remarkable combat pilots of the Second World War. Yet while fellow Soviet fighter pilot Lydia Litvyak became internationally famous, Budanova's extraordinary story has remained comparatively obscure.
Katya of the Red Sky restores her to the center of the story.
When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, Budanova was already an experienced aviator. After joining Marina Raskova's pioneering women's aviation program, she trained on the Yak-1 and entered the 586th Fighter Aviation Regiment. From the air-defense skies over Saratov she moved south to the inferno of Stalingrad, where she fought alongside experienced Soviet pilots in some of the most dangerous aerial combat of the war.
Her career carried her through the 437th Fighter Aviation Regiment, the elite 9th Guards, the 296th Fighter Aviation Regiment, and finally the 73rd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment. She flew escort missions, intercepted German bombers and fighters, protected Soviet ground-attack aircraft, and developed a reputation as an aggressive and highly capable combat pilot.
Budanova has traditionally been credited with eleven aerial victories-six individual and five shared-although modern researchers continue to debate her exact score. This book examines those claims carefully rather than simply repeating the legend, separating documented history from wartime credit and later reconstruction.
On July 19, 1943, during fighting over the Donbas, Budanova's Yak was fatally damaged while protecting Soviet aircraft. She managed to bring the fighter down near Novokrasnovka but died from her wounds. She was only twenty-six.
Fifty years later, she was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation.
