Karl & Anna a Drama in Three Acts is a powerful expressionist play by Leonhard Frank that explores the profound psychological impacts of World War I. The story centers on Karl and Richard, two German soldiers held in a Siberian prisoner-of-war camp. To survive the desolation of their captivity, Richard shares intimate details of his life and his wife, Anna, with Karl. Karl becomes so immersed in these stories that he eventually assumes Richard's identity in his own mind.
Upon his escape, Karl travels to Richard's home and presents himself to Anna. The play delves into the complex emotional landscape that follows, examining themes of love, longing, and the search for identity in a world fractured by global conflict. As Karl and Anna develop a deep bond, the work raises haunting questions about the nature of truth and the fluidity of human relationships under extreme duress.
This drama is a significant example of early 20th-century German literature, capturing the raw intensity and disillusionment of the post-war era. Frank's sharp dialogue and evocative staging make Karl & Anna a Drama in Three Acts a compelling study of the human spirit's resilience and its capacity for reinvention.
